Footbed
We strive to make shoes that support your health and put a spring in your step. It all starts with our footbed, the part of the shoe you set the sole of your foot on.
A perfect footbed that cushions your step
Each one of your feet has 33 joints, 26 bones, and more than a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments that act in concert to carry your weight and allow you to move. An impeccably built footbed assembled with healthy materials and in compliance with biomechanical criteria, respects your feet and preserves your joints, allowing you to relax in your shoes, roam, and wander afar. Natural, top-quality materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and thoughtful design are what make the difference.
Barefoot on the beach
We ideated our signature footbed by studying the plantar aspect, which is to say the foot’s anatomy. Ideally wide in the front, it supports your foot without crushing or compressing it and complies with your natural gait and swing. Our footbed matches the shape of your foot and cradles it while giving it full freedom, and is designed to distribute your weight onto the whole surface, reducing fatigue and impact. Whichever Mandel shoes or sandals you choose, you’ll feel like you’re walking barefoot on the soft, clean sea sand.
The layers of our footbed
1. Our footbed’s inner sole, where your foot rests, is made of soft, top-quality chrome-free tanned leather. The leather allows air to circulate and helps your feet breathe.
2. The inner footbed is made of cork, a natural, sustainable material known for its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, and latex. Pairing cork and latex allows us to obtain an extremely shock-absorbent and flexible sole that reduces impact and supports your feet.
Both these materials are highly insulating; they protect your feet from excessive heat or cold while guaranteeing excellent breathability.
3. The inner sole rests on a layer of jute, which makes the footbed more durable and flexible.
4. The bottom layer is made of ultra-light EVA, a special polymer compound that holds thousands of miniature “bubbles”. These bubbles further reduce the impact of your feet on the ground, making for added comfort and a confident, comfortable stride.
